What the research says about matcha, its key compounds, and what happens when you drink the whole leaf rather than steeping it.
Why matcha delivers more than brewed green tea
With regular green tea, you steep the leaves in water and discard them. With matcha, the leaves are ground into a powder that you whisk directly into water. You consume the entire leaf. That difference matters: because nothing is discarded, matcha delivers higher concentrations of the compounds that make green tea worth drinking in the first place, and our premium organic ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha is stone-ground according to traditional methods.
The main active compounds in matcha are EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a powerful antioxidant polyphenol; L-theanine, an amino acid that influences attention and stress response; and caffeine. Shade-growing, which is used in the production of matcha, also increases chlorophyll content and concentrates L-theanine in the leaf. A 2020 peer-reviewed review published in Molecules confirmed that matcha is among the most concentrated sources of EGCG available from a food or beverage.
Why matcha delivers more than brewed green tea

Calm, sustained energy without the spike
Matcha contains both caffeine and L-theanine. On their own, these compounds have opposite effects on the brain: caffeine is a stimulant, L-theanine promotes relaxed alertness. Together, they tend to produce a calmer, more focused energy than caffeine alone. This is why many people who find coffee too jittery or harsh find matcha easier to tolerate.
Multiple randomised controlled trials have examined this combination. A 2021 study published in PubMed found that regular matcha intake improved attention and work performance under psychological stress conditions compared to caffeine alone. A
2025 meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials concluded that the L-theanine and caffeine combination showed consistent improvements in attention and reaction time.

A concentrated source of antioxidants
EGCG is the most abundant and active catechin in matcha. Catechins are a type of polyphenol antioxidant. Antioxidants help neutralise free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells when they accumulate. Because matcha is consumed as a whole-leaf powder rather than a brewed tea, the concentration of EGCG per serving is higher than in most steeped green teas.
Research published in PMC (2024) summarised EGCG as exhibiting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties across a range of laboratory and clinical studies. It is worth noting that much of the research on EGCG has been conducted in laboratory settings or on green tea extracts in supplement form. The evidence for whole-food matcha is more limited but consistent with the broader green tea research body.

Green tea catechins and cardiovascular health markers
Several large meta-analyses have examined the relationship between green tea consumption and cardiovascular risk markers. Systematic studies in 2025 found that green tea supplementation significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in adults. A separate meta-analysis found significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in people who consumed green tea regularly.
These findings apply to green tea broadly. Matcha, as a whole-leaf preparation, delivers a higher catechin concentration per serving than brewed green tea. The effects on blood pressure and cholesterol are modest in absolute terms and should not be interpreted as a replacement for medical treatment. They are consistent with the evidence on dietary polyphenols and cardiovascular health.

Cognitive function and matcha
In a year-long study published in PLOS One in 2024, researchers gave older adults with mild memory or thinking concerns either matcha or a placebo every day, without either group knowing which they were getting. The 99 participants who drank 2g of matcha daily showed a real improvement in social acuity, a measure of how well the brain processes information, compared to those on the placebo.
This is one of the most rigorous matcha-specific clinical trials published to date. The results are encouraging but should be understood in context: the study focused on older adults with existing cognitive concerns, and the research on healthy adults is less conclusive. The caffeine and L-theanine combination has more consistently shown short-term attention and reaction time improvements across multiple RCTs.

L-theanine and the stress response
L-theanine has been studied for its effects on the physiological stress response. A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial study published in PMC found that L-theanine significantly reduced the subjective stress response to a cognitive stressor and also reduced salivary cortisol levels three hours after administration compared to the placebo group.
Matcha is one of the most concentrated whole-food sources of L-theanine available. The shade-growing process used in matcha production causes the plant to produce more L-theanine than sun-grown green tea. Because you consume the whole leaf, the L-theanine content per serving is higher than in a steeped cup of green tea from the same plant. The studies referenced on this page represent genuine peer-reviewed research. Most of the evidence base comes from green tea research broadly, not exclusively from matcha-specific trials.
